BMGW teamed up with MrA for an outing on Ozette in search of Perches Gigantus Ozettes. MrA rolled in a few minutes after 0400 and we were on the water almost exactly 2 hours later. It started out sloooow, the slowest start I have ever experienced at Ozette, a location change and a little breeze blowing into a shoreline and we began to get bit. Gear in use was Dons Dandy Crappie jigs exclusively, I used the spin jig and Alex used the plain jigs, we experimented with colors until finding the RED/CHRT to produce the best results. By mid day we still had not found the Gigantus, close a few under the 10" mark and a plenty throw backs under the 7" size with tons of "Squawkers" or "Flying Fish" that we kept the various eagle families well fed. I would be remiss to not mention the beautiful cutthroat trout that keep things interesting and the scenery for sure. Early afternoon brought on a game changing situation, the stiff afternoon breeze turned into a white capping reed slapping NorWesterly, this was hitting a few spots I knew would benefit and shortly after hitting the first spot MrA put the first Gigantus on ice. This was a real workout for the old fishing guide and a real workout for my Minnkota but we managed to be able to hold just far enough off the reedline to work the jigs effectively. By late aftrernoon we were tired, windblown but happy to have 6 Gigantus Perches in the box, we called it when the battery for the Minnkota just did not have enough juice to hold our position. My tournament trail partner outfished me again! Klahowya!!
