We had two great weather days and two great fishing days, one greater then the other. I caught two(!) sockeye salmon, one at 4 1/2 lbs. and the other at 6lbs., 3 ozs. Both males with the typical hooknose but not red yet. Both were released but this one tangled around the downrigger and we had to go in to shore to untangle it from the net AND the clip setup. Being in the canoe Melanie couldn't get around me to crank up the downrigger but she did a GREAT job of netting under very trying circumstances. I did better on the other knowing what to expect and we swapped seats early on while the fish was further out. You know what it's like to troll in a snaggy place and you sometimes don't know if it's a big fish or if it just popped the clip on a big snag at two miles an hour? Well, you KNOW when these fish hit as the line imm. peels of at about 20 miles an hour! On the light kokanee special ugly stick with the smallest abu-garcia c4 reel with 15 lb braid the fights were unbelievable. Melanie caught a good sized dolly, 3 lbs. or so,on the same setup (her rod!) as we trade back and forth depending on who is "up".She prefers ultra-light spining rods for the fight, but this one gave her quite a few good runs, she had "fun" with her downrigger special. Total for the trip. two imm. released sockeyes(thanks for the fights of a lifetime.Who says these fish only bite bare hooks?)we caught one dolly and 3 trout the first day ( along with one salmon!) and used the location info and bite timing from the first day to improve the 2nd day to 5 dollies and 3 trout (along with another sockeye!), two of the trout were really a nice size, with Melanie catching the biggest Dolly and biggest cuttrout of the trip (about 15 inches), but catching and releasing those salmon was really a thrill. We've only caught one other salmon there of any size this year. It was a one year fish (sockeye, chome bright, 10 inches or so,Melanie says it was the best fighting fish for it's size she's ever hooked, with about 5 or 6 fresh sea lice wigglin on it) and that silver Melanie caught and release last fall were the only salmon we've caught in 5 years or so there, Must be doing something different that we've been doing the same for years now to catch two in two days! Scenery was even more stunning from the water as the weather wind wise enabled us to fish all day on Sunday instead of whitecaps driving us off in the afternoon. We had originally planned on Neah Bay on Tuesday and Seiku on Monday for Salmon but wind was forcast so we decided on Quinalt, fish gods must have had a chuckle to send those salmon my way anyway, it's not like we haven't had to release a ton of salmon up there as well! All for now, I think we'll be hitting Quinalt on Sat. for a one day trip as we have plans not fishing related for a week or two after that.Bob and Melanie
