Spent a week on Ross Lake with reasonable luck until the weather heated up, then everything went deep. Had good luck with Small Cadis and Stimulator, caught a nice 16" Brook on a Mayfly. Having never been to the lake before didn't know what to expect but was pleasantly surprised. Had most success if I could get to a spot right after I saw a rise. Almost 100% of the time if I got my fly within a few feet of the 1st rise I'd get a hit. Everything I caught was a Brook trout. Most were 11" to 16". (13" min size on this Lake) Other good spots seemed to be under drift wood logs against the shore. This lake is full of that stuff. I tried all times of the day. Early morning, mid day and evening. Prior to the heat wave there was enough crusing fish and hiding spots near the edge to make all areas of the lake rewarding. After 3 days of near 100 degrees there was little or no surface activity. I met a guy who'd been fishing up there 30 years. He said a knat hatch was pretty consistent.!
By that time it had been so hot nothing was coming up. Tried Muddler, and Wolly Bugger on a sinking line w/no hits. Finally got to a stream that was actually flowing into the lake (NOTE: All of the streams flowing into the lake can not be fished for 1/4 mile some as far a 1 mile) therefore the water was much colder and had a great 20 min. where I caught (and released) 6 fish. All Brook the smallest 12". It was our last day and a great way to go out.
