Can it be that this is really the first Kokanee report from Stevens since the end of July? This place is humming in the spring, but we were the only boat on the water this morning other than the rowers and some guy surfing behind a boat. Not wake boarding, mind you, actually surfing the wake without any sort of rope tied to the boat. Pretty cool actually, but I digress.
Went out with my dad and wife for Kokanee this morning. We were in the water around 7:45am and fishing by 8am or so. Weather was extremely foggy and while we were rigging up we got so turned around that we didn't know where we were. Fished two rods on downriggers in the 30-40ft range and I longlined on top. All three had typical small dodger setups. Longlining near the top seemed to be the ticket, which was a surprise given the feedback I've seen. I pulled in a 14"+ Koke that was starting to get pink. After that we quickly got another one in the same size that was very chrome. Both very nice fish. Also brought up a smaller one somewhere in there. We lost a couple and missed a couple bites after that. All the fish and bites were on the longlining gear, surprisingly enough.
Plenty of fish down in the 20-40ft mark on the fish finder, but they weren't biting. I didn't catch the water temp at the top, but I was really surprised at how warm it felt when I dipped my hands in for a wash.
