Got to 4th of July Lake at about noon and fished for 3 hours. There was some thin ice along some of the shoreline and across the first narrow part, with a channel broken through it that boaters were using. There were about 10 cars in the parking lot when I got there.
Walked over to the shoreline before the narrows, and fished an area that was free of ice. No action, packed up and went about midway down the lake to some deeper water, ran into a guy who said he did okay on powerbait with salmon eggs.
Got to the new spot and was getting steady bites on the powerbait salmon egg combo. Only managed to hook three. They were small by 4th of July standards 12-14". Didn't see anyone else hook up. Boaters coming by were saying no luck. I've always used flyfishing tippet for my leader with powerbait and a slip sinker and that seems to result in more bites on this lake.
Not at all the way it used to be Dec 1 at this lake, but nice sunny day, caught some hard fighting fish.
One guy in the parking lot said he did really well, but didn't get any specifics.
