Spent a few hrs out on Hog Canyon today. the ice was about 4" on most of the south end. but the north end still has open water.
Had about 7 good takes, hooked up 4 times and iced 3 fish.
First one was 17" second was 12" and the third was 20"
Great first day on the ice, cant wait to hit it again this weekend.
Hopefully there will be more ice by then.

glad to hear the ice is ready for ice-fishing! hoping to get out there this weekend too. it should be in even better shape considering the cold temps. did you drive all the way down or hike in like i read in some of the other posts?

I was able to drive in to the parking lot and get on the ice from there.

Since there isn't anything in the picture to compare size of the fish. knowing the size makes a huge difference. The smallest looks smaller than 12" by looking at the picture. But that is because the other two are so much larger. I had a feeling the big one was 18" or better. I don't know. 4" inches of ice is not something I would feel all that comfortable walking on.

4" is the recommended minimum thickness according to the us coast guard, but i'm with you -- i'd be pretty nervous on it. i'm headed there this weekend, and hope these cold nights add another inch or two by then.

4" is good but keep in mind the ice thins as it heads off the bank. And watch out for that maniac in the Ford Explorer who drove out onto Hog Canyon a few years ago! Scared the crap out of me and made everybody else quite nervous. That clown's vehicle survived 8-9" ice. Come to find out he had Wisconsin plates but zero Washington ice knowledge.
