What a beautiful day, so we went to Riffe lake. Stopped by the Cowlitz first by the salmon hatchery, didnt seem like much was going on. Got to Riffe and fished next to the dam. Brought some worms and shrimp, first cast my bf gets a fish, 2nd cast he gets another. I thought we were going to limit quick, but for some reason despite my set up being identical to my fishing partner I didnt get a bite, but after his 2nd fish he never got another bite either. We were fishing with cocktail shrimp and a piece of worm about 9ft under a slip bobber. Fished awhile longer with nuttin, talked to some other guys they caught a few and never had another bite too. After a few hours we went up to the fishing bridge but the water is so low in the lake that it was a river under the bridge so we gave up quick after no bites and lots of snags. We went back down to the dam to fish a bit more before we had to drive home. Didnt take long for me to finally get a bite, my bobber didnt get pulled down, i just noticed it slowly floating in the opposite direction. Set the hook and brought in a 18in clipped fish. It was hook jawed and squirting milt, and its adipose fin was clipped. I wasnt sure what it was, because if it was a coho its spawning time is wayyy off, and the smaller coho we caught were not clipped. I thought maybe a winter steelhead? But it had no color to it, and I have no idea how it would get above the dam. I am still unsure exactly what it is. Lemme know what you guys think.

Nice report. Was it a windy day out there when you went?

I'm curious about the wind this day also.

Do coho jacks not change color? I figured if it was a coho boot it would be red to black. There was only a little wind, and towards evening almost no wind.

I wouldn't call it a "BOOT", but it's definitely a coho jack.

Are the fish real soft? We were there a month ago and caught lots of silvers on riggers and kokanee gear. The meat was nice and red but they were so soft it was mush city.

It is a little soft, tasty thiough. I do try to keep them from flopping around, bruises the meat.

You just wanna keep them cold so the meat doesn't get mushy. they were actually nice and firm for us.

I have a small cooler I put mine in after, right after catching them.

Looks more to me like a jack King..... too many marks on the back to be a coho...also the tell tale for being a coho is that the mouth wouldn't be black like this fish has. Could be aSpringer jack King. LOL!... Whatever, as long as you had fun and you ate the fish... it's all good.

I almost thought it was a springer jack. But its mouth wasnt as dark as a chinooks usually is. But its back was really spotted, and its color almost looks like a king thats turning.

Steelhead6438 is right. That is a jack king. The mouth and the spots give it away.
