While waiting for B run, I have been itching to fish. So Superbowl sunday my buddy Johnny and I hit American lake in his boat. The morning was cold about 29 until the sun had been up for 30 min or so. After that the temp climbed nicley. Worked our way around the island marked tons of suspended trout between 5-10ft and later saw them rising, there was a large hatch not sure what fly though. We brought perch gear so thats what we fished for. Most perch were caught around 53ft. We used a 4lb dropshot rig with real worms or gulp worms. Perch were all chunks and aggressive feeders. I had no ruler, but I estimate the lengths around 7 inches. We ended the morning with 12 perch, fileted and fried just in time for the superbowl. I don't like posting reports without pix, but I had no camera this time, So here are pix of some of the fish I caught in the philippines last month=)

Wow, the perch have moved deeper again. Was out there a few days ago and found them at 30 to 40 ft. Was fishing for smallies, but only hooked one. It was heavy, but after a couple head shakes came unbuttoned. But caught 15 or so nice perch. All caught dragging a carolina rig with a nosed hooked tube bait laced with Garlic Smelly Jelly. Your photos got my attention also...Thanks for the report.

A guy in a kayak was fishing in closer and I saw him catch some perch also, so maybe they are just looking for a certain type of bottom. Or maybe the males are in closer making nests, and the females are staged deeper? All the fish we caught except one were females.

HA HA HA! That's funny! I had to do a double-take on the fish you had photos of b/f i read posting. They look like some of the fish i ate in Indonesia too.

I fished American on Saturday and also got several perch from 50-70'. All females this time. Oh, and, perch dont make nests like the panfish do. They just release their eggs and milt into the weeds and the mass just sticks to the vegetation. The eggs do not taste good to the other fish so they tend to have very successful spawns. Spawning in colder water than the panfish helps their spawning success too. Makes for a great forage base for bass and other predators.

Thanks for the spawning imfo. As long as I've been fishing, never knew that about perch. Obviously, that's a survival tactic that works. American has more than its share of perch.
