I have been reading a ton of articles for crankbaits and spinnerbaits because I never get fish with them. I don't think I caught a single bass on either last year. I tied up cranks and spinnerbaits so I can try to get fish with them this year. I had one pole that had a tube though. After fishing hard with spinnerbaits and cranks I skipped a tube under a dock and got the only bite of the day. I skipped into about six inches of water, right where the dock meets the shore, so either fish was really shallow or ran up to it. Fish was just under 18 inches but skinny, so probably about 2 3/4 pounds. The weather was the usual rainy, windy and cold. I fished from about 11 until 2:15.
I tied up my own weighted jig hooks for shallow water tubes. I started doing that last year. They still cast just fine and with thet weight farther back they fall flatter and slower. The light weight ones will float until I twitch them or they will suspend about a foot down. they are on 3/0 hooks.

Did you modify a stock, out of the package, lead bullet head or pour them that way?

Nice fish.! I had a little luck with spinnerbaits last sept so I've been stocking up. Maybe more productive when the water warms up a bit?

I used splitshots, I tried dipping hooks in the melting pot but the lead won't stay. I used thread to hold them then glued them.

Spinnerbaits, even swimbaits can be great in April depending on the lake (think shallow). Right now it's all about jigs and soft plastics! Maybe a suspending jerkbait? But I would stick with plastics and jigs, slow sinking and slow twitching. Post spawn is an awesome time to break out your crankbaits (May-July)! Start with 4-6 foot divers then 8-12 foot. Nice work on the homemade baits, caution, it can get addictive!! Tight lines.

It was probably a blessing that the split shot wouldn't stay on the hook. A friend of mine melted the lead off some jig hooks to make a different style. On our next fishing trip to Offut Lake he gave me some, which I used. After losing my 3rd 3 lb plus bass because the hook straightened out, we realized that heating took the temper out of the hooks.

Nice fish! I have had luck before early in year with spinner baits 1/8 oz smaller one's around here. I have got bass before in March at Sunday Lake but that was years ago. For crank baits I like the Rat L traps with bb's in them in 1/4 oz size. Usually have some luck with those and catch trout/crappie and perch too. And don't be afraid to throw those away from shore and lilly pads. I have caught lots of fish on crank bait by taking a dumb cast towards the middle of the lake.
