This report is for both Sat. 4/28 and Sun. 4/29, on opening weekend. It was a very good year. On Sat, I got on the water about 06:00. Started getting solid strikes while pulling away from the boat launch. The first strike came so quickly that I barely understood that it even happened. The strikes came often, and were all solid hits that bent my poles real good. I had 4 nice fish in the boat by 07:30, so I stopped using worms on my lure so I could keep fishing.
On Sunday, it was much slower. I was on the water at about 06:00 again. Picked up 2 fish early, at about 06:30 and 07:30. The first one was a fat 16 incher that whacked a green roostertail real good. After those two fish, I got no more action trolling. Eventually I retreated to the shore to still fish some powerbait/powereggs off of the bottom. Took quite a while, but I picked up 2 more fish that way. The first one was a fun fight because it wrapped my line around some reeds. But I could tell it was hooked solid, so I opened the bail to let it run. Success! It untangled from the reeds, went back to some more open water, then I hurried it in and onto the bank.
Plenty of other folks fishing this year on Saturday -- many familiar faces. At the communal fish cleaning station at Kamei campground, one still fisherman had a stringer full of 3 pound trout. The biggest ones usually are had from the bottom of deep water there. The weather was great, not even that windy most of the time. Until next year!
