5/21/2012 5:09:00 PMOne way to guess the depth is to cast your rig into an area where you know what the depth is, then count how long to touch bottom. You'll then know the average speed it falls. Cast to where you want to fish, count and do the math. Say you cast somewhere you know it is 10' deep, and your rig takes 6s to hit bottom. Then if you cast somewhere and it takes 12s to hit bottom then it is likely around 20' deep.
Do a bait check and recast to a slight different spot every 10-15mins. About every 30 mins, remove 2' from the leader.
Eventually you'll find fish. And then you'll have a better starting place for the next time you go - maybe intially adjusting up or down depending on what the water temp has done since you were there last.
