Dropped by to check out Pine Lake since I haven't been there for a long time. Not expecting anything, since I only had an hour. Went out with just the rod and a jar of PowerBait. Caught an 8" rainbow off the left side of the pier, didn't see anyone else catch anything. Not too crowded, misty rainy, nice and quiet.

20,000 trout stocked and 4 weeks later the fishing is dead. Too many people or too many predator Birds or both.

yeah, the entire plateau seems to show up there with rods. they probably made the fishing pier too nice :-)

The fish are still there. The warmer water has caused them to go a bit deeper in the lakes I fish - got to imagine Pine is the same. Trying shortening your leader by 3 to 6' less than what you were using. Also adding some extra scent might help.

I was using a pretty short leader, fwiw. 8" or so

In other lakes this last week I've been catching fish ~5-10' below the surface. So make a guess on what the depth is, subtract 5, use that as your starting leader length.

One way to guess the depth is to cast your rig into an area where you know what the depth is, then count how long to touch bottom. You'll then know the average speed it falls. Cast to where you want to fish, count and do the math. Say you cast somewhere you know it is 10' deep, and your rig takes 6s to hit bottom. Then if you cast somewhere and it takes 12s to hit bottom then it is likely around 20' deep.

Do a bait check and recast to a slight different spot every 10-15mins. About every 30 mins, remove 2' from the leader.

Eventually you'll find fish. And then you'll have a better starting place for the next time you go - maybe intially adjusting up or down depending on what the water temp has done since you were there last.
