Another Sunday to remember on Moses lake. With the trolling motor up at Tri-State getting an overhaul, I knew i'd be spending some time in the kayak if I wanted to catch any fish this weekend. Sunday morning I started paddling around 8 o'clock. The weather was nice, and the wind was blowing just enough to get a nice drift in the kayak. The Moses Lake Walleye Derby was this weekend, and it brought a lot of boats to the water. I didn't have any luck all morning catching fish, but the combat fishing from my kayak with the tournament guys was pretty entertaining. After a late lunch, and after the tournament had closed for the day, I decided to jump back in the kayak. The wind was kicking hard, and I started bouncing my blue/silver squidder Walleye Killer with a threaded worm in about 12-15ft of water. I drifted for about 45 minutes without anything, but a few snags. On my last drift, I decided to only fish one rod, so i could pull through snags easier. I drifted down past the house a bit. I had a really nice bounce going, so i decided i would ride it out. At 5:15pm in about 15 ft of water from the kayak, BANG! I could feel some weight on this one. I set the hook, and started bringing it home. At this point, i'm thinking it's gonna be a nice sized Walleye, but this fish started fighting like something other than a Walleye. After this thing got done doing a few circles around my kayak, and diving to the bottom, i brought it in. A big 22" Moses Lake Rainbow Trout! This fish was a fighter! I scooped him up, and paddled back to the dock. After a long day of fishing, and no catching, i ended up bringing home an amazing fish. It's too bad Moses Lake wasn't having a Trout tournament on Sunday, I probably would have done well! It's good to know there are trout like this in Moses lake. Good luck on the water. Tight lines.
