Mark and Barbara Santos-Johnson and friend Lynn Boes came over to fish Chelan. We decided to see about the red hot Kokanee fishing. There seems to be 3 size classes of fish. 12", 14" and 15.5 (almost, but not quite 16"). We had best success off the downriggers at either 80 or 100 feet. We also got bit on outside rods using snap weights. Mack's Lures Cha Cha Squidders got bit best when baited with Pautzke's Fire Corn in Natural and Yellow. Worden's 0000 dodger along with Mack's Double D dodger were the attractors out in front of the squiddy's that produced our bites. Speeds of 1.3 to 1.6 mph worked best, but bites occurred all the way from .8mph up to 1.9mph. Things happened in bursts. We'd have blank period punctuated with multiple hook ups. We probably lost half of the first 20 fish hooked until we settled into a routine. Then I'd say the boated fish to hooked fish ratio improved to 75 or 80 percent. They limited and got back in time to rest, clean up, eat and enjoy the Stanley Cup Finals game that their son was attending. The Kokanee averaged a pound a piece... Very nice for Chelan. Got a couple of "bonus" little lakers in the mix too. Terrific day with some super people from the Lake Washington PSA group.
