AJ's Dad
7/1/2012 7:11:00 AMI have fished Hayden a ton for smallies and my lure of choice was always a 2" tube jig. Hayden is loaded with rock points and just plain rocky structure and the tube jig will load the boat. When the top water bite is on, there is nothing funner but when it stops, tie on a jig and you'll load the boat. When fishing Hayden, don't just limit yourself to the smallies. There are some good pike in that lake. My guess is that you'll pick up a few of them while fishing for the small mouth.
Happy fishing

8/3/2012 3:25:00 AMI have been away for two weeks so can't give you a current report. Basically, I found smallmouth all around the lake, though I seemed to do better on the east and south shores. Top water worked very well early most mornings, especially if I stayed out of the sun. I did quite well off the end of docks with either a smoke colored grub, a watermelon with red and black flakes twin tail, or a small Gitzet tube in brown claw. I am pretty sure that the range of baits that work is very large. I would guess that the fish are mostly deeper now, but I caught them right up to the shore.
I caught some pike in shallower water - and wasn't happy because they took my lures! Caught a few largemouth around lillypads, but to be honest I never really figured that out.
Good luck!
David
