Well , I got my chance to hook up with my good friend and spiritual mentor Joe Schmidt a.k.a fishinChristian of Yakima of Yakima to go try for walleye or smallmouth bass from Grant County's Seep Lakes. Pacbass and I had done well on crappie there last month but the water conditions and glut of baitfish made that a daunting prospect for Joe and I. We stopped and picked up some nice melons from some gals at a fruit stand along the way and then launched Joe's 2 man pontoon boat and began casting the shore line with various jigs. It was pretty much a "Dink Fest" for the first hour or so, but when we crossed the current out let to the south west side, the size of the fish improved dramatically. The bigger samllies averaged about a pound and a half as we put together a productive pattern as the day progressed. The key depth was 17 feet as well as targeting vertical basalt ledges with shade. It was a match the Hatch pattern too as the bigger fish keyed in on Berkley Gulp Smelt colored 3" minnow jigs on 1/16th oz jigheads twitched along the current seams. The bigger bass just smashed those minnows and were coughing up like sized baitfish as we fought them to the boat. Joe changed up pretty often and found success with various crankbaits, my Damzel Nymph jig and a 2" firecracker double tail . All told, those bronzebacks gave our ultralite rods a work out and we caught some where near50 bass for the day. Please take note to dress lightly for the heat and take plenty of sunblock and water. I had to cancel a trip today with Pacbass on account of too much heat yesterday. Tight lines brothers. Jiggy
