I used to fish Swofford when I was around 12 yrs old and never forgot the fun times I had there with my friends catching very nice large mouth bass out around that little "island" that is closer to the boat launch. Now I'm 31 and have recently really started fishing again for fun. I took a trip to Swofford just to see what I could drum up in the way of large mouth about a month ago. To my surprise I caught five 2 lb-ers, which is fun fishing in my opinion!
I went this last week (8-3-2012) with my father in-law and caught six fish, this time I caught five large mouth ranging from less then a pound to three pounds and caught one very large rainbow trout all from the shore. I was using a top water soft plastic green frog when I caught the 3lb-er. I switchted to a crank bait shortly after and caught four more bass and the one trout. The trout hit that crank bait so hard I thought it was going to yank the rod out of my hands! I've never had a trout hit a crank bait before. My father in-law caught one very small large mouth on an orange crank bait but swore up and down that he had a bunch of strikes but just missed them. We fished for almost four hours from 9:00am to 12:45pm. We saw large groups of blue gill suspended just below the surface around the shore but we didn't try to catch any of them as our focus was bass. It was fun and I will be going back, hopefully with a boat this time to try some other spots on the pond.
