Took a break from musky fishing and fished a few of the alpine lakes in the Snohomish county area with the family, spent several days fishing Coal and neighboring lakes. Primary objective was to enjoy the views and fishing was secondary. However, fishing ended up be pretty excellent with a variety of tackle options from small Kastmaster spoons and various spinners. Caught several different trout species, eastern brooks, rainbows and cutts but mainly brookies. We had intended on keeping a couple for the campfire dinner but I suppose I just got lazy and released them all. Nothing over 8 inches but no complaints. Pretty fish and even better water clarity and views. Also came across mountain lion tracks(woo hoo) It also looks like the road washed out again recently. Fresh dirt and some boulders scattered around. Took some pictures but need to pull them off the camera. An excellent family outing....and gorgeous country.

Hey Kev, when were you at Coal? I was just up there on this past Saturday. Took my daughter for a little hike. Stopped in at Coal. Only through maybe 10 casts, but hooked up once. You could see fish. That one camp spot directly in from the parking, is DANG nice.

Wondering if you ever have done the hike in at the end of Coal lake road? It is the trailhead to Independance lake. 3/4 mile. 20 min. Some nice fish in there in past years, def. bigger than Coal brookies. Also... kind of cool, but this time I found the trailhead to "Pass" lake. This is a little lake that is only 0.5 miles from Coal lake road. The trail head is 275 paces from the Outhouse at Coal lake parking. Just walk up the road, look carefully where there is a slight widening in the road for one vehicle parking. Very short hike,,,, but the horseflies got my daughter pissed off, and we had to turn around. Think of this lake, in that I don't think anybody really knows about it. Nice!

Is the turn off for Coal lake indicated as "Coal lake road" or NF road 4060?
