Hurt my back last night. Couldn't sleep for most of the night, but managed to roll out of bed to get some fishing in. Was quite the chore hauling 100lbs of batteries down 3 flight of stairs with a bad back. Had to do them seperately and very slow. Got on the water 30 mins later than usual.

I'm determined to try and catch my first top water fish. I tried it for the 1st 30 mins, but the condition just wasn't right IMO. So I started cranking shallow at first in 5-10' of water. Got myself a 10" SMB soon afterwards. Then I caught myself another one of those elusive stick fish. This one was thin, but was quite long. Maybe 30".

I keep fishing and I can't find the bass. They don't appear to be shallow or mid depth. I found a ton of fingerling LMB. By how many I saw, I would expect a LMB with every cast. I get myself a little squawfish on a mid crank.

I started to fish out deeper. I found a down tree in 30' of water and I see a couple of fish on the sonar. I cast out a deep diving crank and fish on! Got myself a little 12" SMB. I make multiple casts with the crank with a miss. I throw out a heavy football and get myself another 12" SMB.

I circle the area and marking fish from 30-45' of water. I couldn't get the fish in 40' of water to bite. I have my football rig on the seat behind me. I made a cast out with my crankbait and SNAP! Look at the seat and see the top of my Kistler Z-Bone rod missing. FFFFUUUUUUUU. The crankbait got caught on the pole behind me and took the top with it. It's missing about 6-8" of the tip. $300 down the drain. UGH.

Now I'm pissed and my back is killing me from the motions of casting.

I take out the trolling rig to see if I can land my first trolling fish for it. I trolled for 1.5 hours and had 6 take downs on a wedding ring! Out of those 6, I only had fish on for 2 of them. 1 of them, I had the fish on for a couple of secs. The other, I had it halfway to the boat before I lost it. I know the braid has no slack, so I was trying to reel it really slow to prevent ripping the hooks out.*sigh*

So I looped around and make another pass. This time, I had no bites at all. Maybe next time.

I noticed there were less trailers at the lake this morning. I wonder if this means the salmon run is very slow.
