This is the first time for me to write a report, so forgive me if I miss something.

I got three catfish and one big fish that I'm still not sure what it is. Some people say it's SMB, others say it's carp. Do you have any idea? And is it safe to eat?

Looks like a big ol' Carp to me. Them are safe to eat, but taste like MUDD. It doesn't have the stripes i would expect to see on a SMB.

Or it could be a tench. Tenches are like carp but they have a more slender catfish like shape. The state record tench came from Lake Washington, so maybe a population of tench established themselves in Lake Sammamish.

thats a catfish. brown bullhead or yellow catfish.

It's a Carp. For sure, 100%.

Looks like a tench to me as well. Carp have larger scales. It is not a catfish or bullhead catfish and it is not a Bass.

That'd be a carp. And even though you caught it in Sammamish, I have my doubts about eating it. If you really wan to try eating it, have a look on page 20 of the regulation pamphlet and follow the directions on the bottom of the page with regards on preparing the fish.

That certainly doesn't look like any of the carp I'm used to seeing, but maybe the strain over here is different than those in eastern Washington. Does it have large scales?

No, it doesn't have large scales. And do you notice that the fish eyes are red...

I'd never heard of a Tench before, but looking at it's description and images on the internet, I'm sort of leaning towards that. Interesting to say the least. I'm certain it's not a bass or a catfish, but the the details are kind of hard to make out in the picture. Thanks for sharing.

I may have been a bit hasty as the pic isn't all the detailed. As mentioned by others, if all the scales are small, in the 1/4" diameter range, it would rule out carp. Also, most carp that I have caught have barbels/whiskers and I do believe that tench do not. Send some pics and info to the WDFW office in Bothell, I have a feeling that they may be interested in your catch.

It is definitely a catarpenchfish and should be listed under "other." ; )
In addition to the WDFW, try the nuclear energy commission. They have an office near Hanford, which is where the fish probably originated.
Seriously, did it fight much? Fun post.

I agree with Mike... When in doubt as to quality of meat, or taste, safety of pollutants, or just about any doubt you have in your mind.,, smoke anything, add the right amount of Sirachi, and dig in. (-:

Looks like a Tench for sure.
Bake it on a cedar plank, after baking for 35 minutes throw the fish in the garbage can and eat the cedar plank. ;)

Thanks everyone, so I assume it is a tench. It didn't fight too much. Maybe because I didn't throw very far, I thought it was a normal size catfish, so I pulled it to the dock then my friend picked it up by dragging my fishing wire. I guess it didn't realize it had been caught.

And I have eat part of it, it's great and I'm fine:)

its a carp of some sort you can tell by that shape of its mouth. or it could even be a sucker fish.

A tench is in the same family as carp and has the same sucker mouth.
