Fished the Fremont side of the Ship Canal right at sunset, but only caught a dink smallmouth. Was about to call it a night when Bryne Chum let me know he was on his way down there as well. We decided to break out the nightcrawlers and try some night fishing. Started with a bobber, but soon followed Bryne's lead, and found out that worms on the bottom was the way to go. After that it was lots of action, and the strikes would usually start within 30 seconds of the bait hitting the bottom. Caught a rock bass that swallowed the hook, so I decided I might as well take a few more home to make it worth my while. Ended up catching 10 fish, and taking home 6 rock bass. Had lots of strikes and nibbles besides that, so it was a fun time. I finally ran out of worms, so that seemed as good a time as any to call it a night.

When bonking the fish I discovered that rock bass have spines on their undersides as well as their tops. I hit the fish on the head and drove a spine into my hand like a nail. (Actually it took me two times to figure what had happened. It was dark!)
