Met my friend Pete at Green Lake early (5:00AM) as we wanted to try some of Green Lakes vaunted??? catfishing!(Actually, I got a little lost in the dark and showed up about 10 minutes late.) We chose the great "T" dock at the north-east end of the lake, at the rental shop. Water temp. was 66 degrees at 10'. Anyway, we were fishing in the dark by 5:30... Pete had a bite about 15 minutes in and reeled in a nice... Rock Bass! We had all the great catfish bait... worms, liver (smelly!) and blood catfish bait... but not a single bite! By 7:00 it was getting lighter, so we changed up to trout gear. Power Eggs, marshmallows and worms... about 7:30 I had a hit on the aforementioned marshmallows and worms, and reeled in a 10" Yellow Perch. The next hour produced nothing, the weather was a bit cool and somewhat windy... at 8:45 Pete had first big hit and brought in a nice feisty, chunky Rainbow of 12". Power Egg combo of pink & chartreuse did the trick. I had to answer Mother Nature's call and left for the restroom... when I returned, Pete had landed another 12" 'Bow on my pole. In the next half hour, Pete brought in three more 'Bows, the biggest at 13 1/2"... all of these fish were bright and very chunky, and very feisty. The water having cooled down significantly, the fish are returning to their great shape.
One of life's greatest mysteries is how on earth can one fisherman catch almost all the fish on a trip, when another is fishing with the same bait, same method and less than 6' apart!!! Scientific research has concluded without a doubt it must be the effect of "lucky gum", the "lucky yellow pole", or a combination of the two! I had even lit up my "lucky" pipe, to no avail!
Anyway, by 9:30 the "bite" was over and had only a few subtle bites the rest of the day. Pete left about 1:00 due to a previous commitment, while I stayed until 4:00, just hoping that the "bite" would come on again. Throughout the day I tried spin-casting with a silver Kastmaster, with absolutely no success. By noon, most of the clouds had burnt off and the sun was very bright, obviously having a detrimental effect upon the fishing.
Green Lake can really be challenging... you never know what you might (or might not) catch, but it is always rewarding. Just watching the thousands of people jogging, walking, swimming... families, young lovers, serious athletes... what a wonderful venue to have in the middle of our glorious city! Had a very first, for this fisherman... about 3:00PM an entire wedding party showed up for pictures on the dock. I don't think they were particularly interested in the fishing, and I do believe that I was carefully edited out of the photos. PTL!
