Another horribly long and frustrating day at Deer lake. A lot of hookups, zero fish in the boat. Targeted Rainbows in the 20'-40' depths using a size 1.5 Apex Lure in Rainbow. It took hours to get 4 or 5 bites, and each one came off the hook 5' or 10' after setting the hooks. The wind was evil. At 10-25mph, it was cold and made it extremely difficult to troll where I wanted to go. I might just be done with this lake for the year even though there is one more weekend of fishing left. The last 4 trips split evenly now, 2x 2 limits, 2x skunked. I would hate to end the year in favor of being skunked more than not.

On the plus side, I was able to finally get all the depth data I needed to complete the Deer Lake map! It looks great, and is by FAR more accurate than the map included in my Lowrance 520c. I'll get it put together and posted to the HD Maps section.

The original Native American name for Deer actually translated to "Devil Wind" or so I have been told. I have seen lawn chairs go by the dock at 10' up and at least 20mph. When the wind is blowing, it is not a nice lake to be on, but then I guess that could be said for all places on the water with the wind blowing. The map looks good!!!

Aaron, frustrating as it is I'll bet you'll make one more trip to Deer before the close. I'll look for you next weekend. My last trip on Deer was also zip, zero, nada, but I'll be there one more time before I head to Roosevelt for the winter. Good Luck. Mtngrizz

I was giving serious thought to Rock Lake. It's so dangerous that it REALLY needs an accurate map available to the public. BUT... it's 1.5 hours travel each way, and HUGE. I could probably get the edges mapped out in a single season, but mapping the interior of the lake would take years I think... at least to do it with the accuracy that I've done with Deer Lake. Rack has some amazing fish in it that I would love to catch though.

Perhaps I'll try for 2 or 3 project lakes. I was able to get Deer mapped completely in less than 8 trips so maybe I'll choose a smaller lake as well and just alternate between them. Rock Lake is 2100 acres compared to about 1200 for Deer... and Badger is only 244! Maybe Badger is a good idea!
