Fished from the boat rental dock starting at dawn. Had 5 good strikes, 2 fish on, but lost both right at the dock. One was a rainbow that made a big leap and got off the hook, the other was a good sized brown that took advantage of a moment of inattention while I was fumbling for the net. Losing the brown was a real heartbreaker, because I have yet to catch a brown this season. Learned a lesson about keeping that net close at hand when fishing alone. Then the rain and wind came in and seemed to kill the bite. It certainly dulled my enthusiasm. Still had a fun morning, even if I didn't land any. It was enough excitement for me, and I also got to try out a new rod and reel.

Once again, the fish were nibbling pretty delicately. Most times the only sign of a bite was seeing the line suddenly go slack.

Gort, what did the browny hit on?

Motoboat, it was chartreuse powerbait on your standard egg sinker slip rig.

That was one of the hits where the line just went slack. Part of the problem was that I probably didn't get a good hook set, because it took a good bit of time before I could tell anything was on the line. Someone told me browns are the ones responsible for the daintly little hit-and-run nibbles I've been getting lately. I think I believe him now.

Gort, how long of a leader are you using during the winter months, 2'-3'? I also have yet to catch a brown,...
