Been pretty stagnant for a couple of weeks, could not get into fish. Decided to try Green Lake again, especially since friend Pete had some great success at mid-week, scoring a 18" Rainbow and a 17" Brown on the same day! Met Pete at 7:00AM to fish the Southwest side of the lake. Fishing by 7:15... air temp was a balmy 45 degrees, water temp at the shoreline was 49 degrees... lake definitely warming over the past two weeks. Started with a Nightcrawler on one rig (just in case a Brown happened by), Power Eggs (fl. orange) on the other. Less than fifteen minutes in, the PE rod tip started dancing... three strong dips, then nothing... Great start to a strong day, huh? Not!!! Fished all morning without so much as a tap. Then, at 11:30 I had strong hit and reeled in a beautiful 14" Rainbow. Twenty minutes later, Pete's rod tip dipped and he was into the largest fish of the day, another beautiful Rainbow of 15". Pete left at 1:00, I doggedly stayed on (Pete can fish during the week, while I, a working man, can only get out on my Saturdays!)... no action all afternoon, until 4:00 when I had a solid hit and reeled in a feisty, beautifully colored 14 1/2" Rainbow. I left the lake at 5:00. Skies were cloudy all day, with variable winds from the south and the north. Those from the north brought a bit of a chill, but by and large, a very pleasant, balmy day with a few sun breaks. Started to seriously rain at about 3:30.
The fish are definitely shaking their winter doldrums, as all of them put up a great fight... the last one jumped out of the water four times before coming to the net.
Another sign that Spring is approaching, is the sheer numbers of anglers now hitting the lake. Lots of fishermen in the Green Lake fraternity, and fun to see them all making an appearance. Won't be long, and the shoreline will again be an "elbow to elbow" fishery!
Heard multiple reports that a 24" Brown had been taken on the west side of the lake, early AM... saw one other Rainbow, about 13" to 14" taken on a Kastmaster about 10:00 AM.
I guess there are those who wonder that a man can spend an entire day on the lake, river or stream, catch few or no fish, and call it a day well spent. I guess you have to have the heart of an angler to understand it. One of my favorite quotes comes from an angler of another era, Thaddeus Norris, who wrote, "For the true angler, fishing produces a deep, unspoken joy, born of longing for that which is quiet and peaceful, and fostered by an inbred love of communing with nature." And, I might I add, it produces great friendships as well! PTL!
