According to the recent reports, Telsa had a banner day on the 5th and G-man was skunked on the 8th. Here is how the 9th played out for me. Although the pressure was on the high side, obviously the weather was outstanding. Launched at Magnuson and made a nice run to Fabin Point/I-90. Started my troll from the west to east towing a orange label herring, Pautzke's Fire Brined, cut plugged, Westport rigged, 10' down on the wire, 100+ drop back, at 1.7 mph. As I neared the east side of the bridge, starting to work north to Faben Point, the first strike happened. The fish repetitively hammered the herring to no avail. Miss one. Rebaited, reversed the trolling, same out come. Miss two. Bite turned off for a bit, fished a lot of different gear, unit the bite turned back on when what is becoming my old faithful LW lure, #2 Needle Fish Brass Readhead, gets hammered and releases from the clip. Fought a solid slab halfway to the boat and fish spits the hook. Miss number three. Rigged up my last herring, work the same area, bam, take number four, but same outcome, fish never hooks up. All and all a great day, finally a lot of action for lots of days on the lake, trying to learning this fishery. Three takes on herring and no hook ups?! That's a first for me. I think I just got unlucky, but I will experiment next time and move the trailing hook just past the tail. Finally had the day I've been fishing for on LW other than what I consider plan old bad luck.

Sharpen those hooks.

Yep agreed..those hooks out of the package just aren't sharp enough. I was reminded of that recently with the same problem. They need to stick in your FINGERNAIL; now they have a good chance of hooking those fish. Tight lines. AH

I groaned when I read this. Next time, you'll nail them. I like all of the trailing hook at least half an inch behind the tail, full inch behind will work. They are pecking before the take more than ever right now. Tight Lines.

Interesting enough reelinanrockin and downriggeral, I was using new hooks that I sharpened to boot! But always a good reminder. I think Tesla nailed it that the fish where peaking vs fully committing to the bite Had my trailing hook been set back further, I think I'd had a better chance of hooking up with the strikes. Live and learn.
