Headed for Green Lake this morning to meet up with Pete. Arrived at the lake about 6:00 AM and headed for the east side, to the 65th St pier. Air temp was a chilly 46 degrees, a persistent breeze from the south, and heavily overcast. Started out fishing with the old standby, Power Eggs (chartreuse & red). No action for the first several hours.... tried spin-casting several lures, but... nada! About 7:30, another angler, Mitch arrived at the pier... he was using floats with worms and began having hits, finally reeling in two small Rainbows and a very nice Triploid of 16-17". Having neglected to bring worms myself, I tried several baits under a float myself, but could get no action on those. Perhaps out of sympathy for an old, worn out angler, Mitch graciously offered me one of his Nightcrawlers. Armed with the "bait-de-resistance" I set out with renewed confidence to subdue the reticent Rainbow! About 2:30, finally!, "bobber down", I nervously set the hook and reeled in a 10" 'Bow... had several more takedowns, but missed the hook-set. About 4:00 I had a hit on my Power Egg rig which had been soaking all day long... reeled in a 11" Rainbow (hatchery nugget PE). About 3:30 the day-long breeze quit, the lake flatted out and showers began in eanest... it became one of those surreal afternoons when the lake is like glass, the air is semi-warm and the surface of the lake is dimpled with raindrops... I began to reflect upon the multitude of times in the past, when fly-fishing out of a boat that I had taken dozens of hungry Rainbows on chironomids or spent-winged midge patterns in just such scenarios... I left the lake at 6:00 PM.
Throughout the day it was great fun to observe the eagles and Ospreys fishing, and the hundred of Swallows chasing the emerging midges all over the lake. Upon cleaning the two trout, I discovered what I expected to find, both were stuffed with midge pupae.
Some would question my sanity for spending twelve hours at the lake, bringing home two small trout. Such persons are not true anglers... they are merely "fishermen". An angler is saturated by his environment, he is part of all that is going on around him... he breathes in the experience, catching fish is but a small part of the whole. My day on Green Lake, or any lake or stream I happen to be fishing is filled with reflection, meditation, prayer, and yes, great joy! Henry David Thoreau is credited for saying, "Many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after." PTL!
