This report is actually for 3 days of fishing on Spirit Lake. We were renting a secondary cabin on the lake so had to launch and relaunch my boat which was kind of a pain.
Fishing was tough many of the "locals" I ran into said that they were not biting and had moved deeper. It seemed to me that all the fish were off beds and had spawned for the most part. I realize that some fish probably have not but no fish were spotted on beds and didn't even see small males gaurding beds.
In the 3 days of fishing I ended up catching 6 LMB and all but one were quality fish with the largest being almost 3lbs. This is the classic story of the one (or two in this case) that got away. As I was fishing docks a family was out telling me about how they had this HUGE bass that lived under their dock for years. His name was Walter from what they told me and they said he was their family fish. On the next cast I hit the most perfect sweet spot on the inside back corner of the dock and between the stern of their boat. Tick, tick, HOOK SET and it was a good one. As I fought it back towards the boat I freaked out because this was at least a 5lb fish. I had hooked WALTER!! The water is so clear at Spirit the family could see how big the fish was and a large commotion began. Right as Walter got to the boat he headed for the trolling motor and I bent over to keep him out of it, dang almost lost him, in my haste to keep him from the motor it must have dislodged my hookset and just as I was reaching in to pull him out of the water the Tube popped out of his mouth and shot back to the safety of deep water. I almost started crying last year I caught a ton of fish but no real big ones. The rest of the trip all I could think about was Walter. I came back to his dock two more times and couldnt get another bite.
Next year Walter I will be back for you!!
