Got a jump on the long holiday weekend by fishing Long on Wednesday morning with my buddy Glenn. I picked him up and we were on the water just before 6 am. Fishing was a bit slow but we managed to catch a dozen or so fish. Glenn caught about a 4lb large mouth on a crappie jig. He just can't put down that crappie rod. With all the fry in the water it was actually a good choice using a 1 1/2 in. minnow body on a 1/32 oz. jighead. I tried topwater using a buzz bait and never had a hit. Switched to a grub and drop shot and started to have some luck, in fact I caught my first toothy critter out of Long. I was drop shotting a senko, felt a hit, set the hook and was quite surprised to see a pike on the end of my line. Luckily I had him in the corner of the mouth and he couldn't bite me off, ended up a nice healthy 28 in. beauty. The best small mouth of the day was 3 lbs and we were off the water by 11 am. Downsizing your bait is a good idea right now, the fry are everywhere so it is wise to match the hatch.
