I have not fished these lakes before, but with the recent reports and the history of them, they were on my hit list.
I arrived Saturday A.M and scouted around a bit. I must say, I've never fished with so many folks around, a bit unnerving. Never mind though, it's still fishing! I put my float tube in and tied on an Olive Wooly Bugger. Within 5 mins I hooked and fought a big fish for 20 minutes. I was afraid to break it off after some of the reports I read. I landed a big, battle scarred, 21" Rainbow. Next came a 14" Tiger trout. Weird looking thing. I took off to leave the crowds and went to Merry lake. It was a bit (not much though) less crowded. I got a nice 15" and a 16" Rainbow. One on a bionic worm and one on a black chironomid.
Sunday I went back to Nunnally since there were fewer people. It was windy and I was not getting much action on Buggers, Prince, Hare's ear, or leech patterns. These guys were making a big commotion and talking about all the fish. No secret where the fish were. (Hey, you guys were VERY LOUD!!!!) I paddled over and they were real nice folks. One guy offered me the "secret" weapon and as soon as I started fishing it, I was catching fish again! I hooked into a 17", 2 x 19", and a BIG 22" Rainbow buck. Lot's of battle scars on all of these! I thank those nice fishermen for sharing their spot and technique. I never fail to learn something from other friendly fishermen. All in all, I heard lots of folks were taking 15-24" Rainbows. You had to fish the right spots and the right techniques though, there were as many people complaining that it was "slow".
Good Luck to ALL
