Decided to take the kids out to Deer lake just a bit past 1030 Monday morning. When we first arrived a few folks were swimming to the left of the boat launch, so I decided to bait up two lines and have the kids fish to the right side of the launch. There tends to be a little bit of vegetation here, so I find that bait works better than lure (spare the snags). This was the first time my five year old niece has gone fishing and she was the first one to pull one in. Her rainbow was close to 12 inches. My four year old son caught two rainbows (his first catch as well), and my oldest son caught the largest of the bunch last (apprx 14 inches). I baited up their lines with marshmallows, also used some good ol' fashioned powerbait. Dipped those in some smelly jelly and it wasn't long before we had some action. Definitely had my hands full, but the kids had a great time, not to mention they caught their own lunch.

We have a church camp across from the boat launch and some years they ask me to do the kids fishing derby off their dock.. It is my best kept secret lake that always produces fish for kids and is a blast to see those happy faces! Great job! I was actually thinking of taking my little boat up there Friday morning if I don't hit the salt. Any parasites on the skin?

Salmonbarry, does the church camp have the giant water slide? We saw some folks swimming on the other side while we were there. Yes, it is a great lake, even with limited public access (for those without a boat), there's usually room on the beach to fish. I didn't see any obvious signs of parasites on the fish we had, inside or out. Have you encountered this? I'd heard of parasites found in the past there, but I haven't heard or seen any so far. For the fish I have taken from there, I clean and cook thoroughly, but maybe I'll keep it C&R for a while.

@shyork~ the parasites are just in the skin and tends to get worse as the lake warms up but have never had a problem with eating these fish. They always have nice pink meat and I scrub the scales and skin before I clean them. Yes that is our camp with the water slide.
@srvinme61~ it is just up from the Clinton ferry about a half mile, turn left at the store and you will be on Deer Lake road. Follow around until you see the sign for public access.
