Went to American looking for big perch on plastics. Got a few but they were hit and miss. Got 40 total fish with about half being rockbass, 12 keeper perch, and the rest smallmouth.

Big win on this outing, I caught my personal best smallmouth of 5# 12oz. Fat football that one was. Got 3 other smallies over 2#. They liked the drop shot with 4" green pumpkin Kuttail worm. The bass showed no particular depth preference but I was trying to target deeper areas mostly in around 20- 40 ft. All but one bass was released (one guy got a hook pretty bad and was bleeding badly so it came home).

For a perch outing, I would rate it about a 3 but if I had been targeting bass it would rate 5 so I give it an overall average of 4. Not a bad day at all.

Wow Jiggr, Nice looking bass, and all around good day on the water. Thx. for the pics. Hope your small HP motor situation worked out somehow, or you found another alternative.

Still working on the motor need. My cousin did get his hands on one but it is in pretty rough shape. Needs a water pump and a general tune up. Not sure if it will even run. We shall see. We may end up just running two electric motors and request tows from our other family's boats. Whatever works.

The perch were not huge, average 10 inches. Had one around 12. I usually get a good number of 12+" perch using a texas rig 7" worm on the flats in about 25-40'. This time, they were just not there or not hungry for what I was offering. Using a bigger bait selects for bigger fish and I guess it worked with the bass.

American used to be my favorite smallmouth lake. Now I fish Tapps. As far as numbers, Tapps is hard to beat. But American has Tapps hands down when it comes to size. Without a doubt, pound for pound, American kicks out bigger fish by far. I've caught three over 4 lbs from American, with 3 lbers being the norm. In Tapps 3-12 is my best, and most of the biggest are around 3 lbs even. But the one thing I don't miss are those damned rock bass bites. As you know, for every smallmouth bite, one has to go through dozens of peckity peckers. Anyway, congrats on the five pounder. That is a beauty!
