Took a couple of friends out on Mayfield for a day musky fishing. One of the gents had never fished for muskies before and i was hoping to at least get him over one. We headed into one of the coves to see if we could get him one. We saw a few toads first thing in which was a good thing. We got to see a couple. Then after leisurely casting for about 2 hours I hooked one and hand the rod over to the gent. He handled her like an old pro. And we put a tiger,a smidge over 38" into the frabill. She was released safely with a good tail splash and a little bit of the lake in our face she gave this new musky angler a thrill that he won't forget!

I think that all need to understand how important it is to get these fish into the net as quickly as possibly. Don't let them run themselves into exhaustion. The fish may be hardy, but not as hardy as some think they are. Hookem' and get the fish to the boat. Get a picture and let the fish go. You shouldn't keep the fish out of the water any longer than you can hold your breath. And remember the 50" inch size limit! I'm strictly catch and release! Let em' go so they can grow.. is what I always say! Just my little part in EDUCATION..

Mission accomplished got the young man his very 1st musky. We continued on the rest of the day spotting a few here and there but could not hook up the rest of the day. Water temps were 64 degrees. A good breeze in the afternoon and a pretty good suntan was had by the 3 of us. Great day on the water with a new and good old friends..
Cheers, Todd

Nice fish!

Re: release. Muskie aren't the best eating fish, and are kind of bony (I fished the Dakotas and Canada in my early years). Just another reason for C&R on these guys. They are a lot like Northerns, which are also bony, but in we tossed Muskie back even in the '60's when we had others to choose from.
