Got out on the water around 8:00 AM, picked up a buddy and his son at the state park boat launch in a boat I rented from Mardon resort. We were targeting smallmouth, or anything else, really, like perch, panfish, even went for some of the HUGE trout that were jumping all around us. Basically threw the tackle box in between the 3 of us: worms, senkos, grubs, panfish jigs, Dick Nites, rooster tails, spinner baits.
We ended up catching a bunch of small perch, 2 catfish (they liked the marshmallows we were floating worms with). My friend's son took home the only keeper, a medium-sized catfish. After they left I went back out with my 6 year old boy and caught another couple perch that were big enough to keep.
Still, 3 keepers after a long, hot day on the reservoir was a bit disappointing (granted, still better than a day at the office). Saw a few locals come in with large stringers full of fish, so I started wondering what the trick is. I suspect it's just finding where they are, and I'm no expert water-reader.
Either way, the gauntlet has been thrown down. I must now conquer that lake. Anyone have any tips?
