Hit Lone Lake around 9:30 AM or so. Started out trolling my "Italian" Woolly Bugger (olive chenille, black marabou tail, black shlappen hackle, and gold or silver tinsel between the palmered hackle) on a 10 ft leader behind floating fly line. After a half hour, I decided to switch to a chironomid pupa pattern after moving into deeper water and giving mind to the swooping swallows. Still nothing. Eventually, I switched to my new Type IV Level Sink line and tied on the Italian bugger. Started picking up hits. Took a hit but lost one dinker. Kicking strong in my float tube and trolling downwind, I was stripping and releasing 6 inches at a time, when I took a hard hit. This felt good with all the give and take off a singing reel. After playing the trout for a good five minutes, I landed a 16 inch fatty rainbow. As anyone who has fished Lone Lake knows, this is 2 inches short of the minimum. Oh well... Still, this was the best for the day--and probably for all fishing!
The hours I was there until 4:00 pm. By the end of the day, two or three dinker rainbows between 9 and 11 inches, one smallmouth bass(?), and the big fatty. Many hours burned, but a good day of fishing. Tight Lines!
