Well if our target was perch this would have easily been a 5+ day, but since the real target was kokanee can only give it a 3 and that’s generous at that since trolling for them was a complete cluster. We never had a bite trolling and got snagged about 5 times! I don’t know if someone went out and intentionally sunk a bunch of snags or if the weeds/plant life is extra tall this time of year but it was a real pain and it happened all over the lake, the west end, the east end before the bend, they were everywhere. We were always at least 10’ off of the bottom and some happened while we should have been 20’ off of the bottom. I hope they’re gone by next season or my favorite little kokanee lake may be un-trollable and that’d really bum me out. We’ll see, first time I’ve ever had this problem there, there had been the occasional snag but nothing like what happened on Saturday.
On the positive side, since trolling was basically a no-go we anchored up in ~28’ of water near the bend in the lake and pulled out one keeper perch after another for about 3 hrs. Got to the point we were throwing back perfectly good keepers, if they were lip hooked, just so I could be done cleaning fish at some point that night. I keep perch starting at about 8”, several were in the 10-12” range and all had fat bellies on them. There is some sort of small greenish/blue worm they are feasting on near the bottom, they were all full of them. Didn’t stop them from taking our night crawlers the second they hit bottom though. We must have caught ~70 of them, only 4 were too small to keep and we ended up taking 48 home. The rest will be caught again at a later date! Took me ~2hrs to clean the 48, not too bad for me.
