Wow! Trout fishing is back in Western Washington!!! Met my friend, Pete, at Green Lake to try to get our trout fishing mojo back. Been pretty bleak since early July. Met at 7:00 AM at the north end of the lake, air temp was a chilly 45 degrees at outset... a very beautiful morning. Water temp was 59 degrees, the recent rains have cooled down the water greatly. Began fishing with Power Eggs (pink on one pole, chartreuse on the other)... Pete tried nightcrawlers. About five minutes in, I had a big hit... fought the fish to about ten yards from shore and the hook popped out... repeated the same scenario twice more, before landing a nice 15" 'Bow ten minutes later. Ten minutes later, landed a 17" Rainbow... the pink PE were the ticket. Next, Pete got into the action, landing a 16" 'Bow on the nightcrawler. Action was non-stop...we had seven fish to the beach by 8:00, besides losing at least six others (I think I was using too small a hook... #8). Pete had his limit at 8:30, it took me another 15 minutes to get mine. Pete took the prize for the biggest, a beautiful 17 1/2" Rainbow. We had five fish over 16", and the smallest was 12". Left the lake at 9:00.
Amazingly, none of the fish I cleaned had anything in their stomachs... these are hungry fish! To me, this is the beginning of the best season for trout... the crowds are very small, the fish are hungry and feisty and the weather offers all kinds of challenges. Going to be fun from here on out! PTL!
