After the recent reports i thought it would be fun to go out and give the perch a shot. I have never fished for perch before and always read that they were good eating. I caught a ton of smaller ones maybe around 4-5 inches and only one decent one. Brought the one home and had a great fish taco! Looks like I'm going to have to try and catch a few more for dinner sometime soon!

Culling out the small perch from the larger ones can be frustrating. I have been using a drop shot with a 2 inch plastic minnow in watermellonseed doctored with garlic Smelly Jelly. I still get bit by the little ones, but at least half of the hook ups I do get are nice perch. I've been averaging around 50% of the fish I actually hook are 10-13 inches. Now where I've been fishing which is the bay at the very south end of the lake before going into Little American, I've been catching my larger perch around mid-bay in 40-43 ft of water, making certain that my sinker is always in contact with the bottom. In the back of the bay I got more bites, but they were all small. For the most part, it seems the larger perch separate themselves from the schools of smaller ones. I don't know. But I've been regularly bringing home 20 or more nice sized perch each trip. Hope this helps. American lake does need a thinning of perch. Now if I could figure out something useful to do with the rockbass, that would be great.
