Green Lake continues to produce some hot, hot, hot fishing for big Rainbow Trout. Met friend Pete at the lake at 7:00 AM... temp a balmy 50 degrees, not a breeze. Water temp at the shoreline was 57 degrees. Lines in the water by 7:15, I was using nightcrawlers on one rod, Power Eggs on the other (pink). As usual, Pete landed the first fish, a beautiful, bright Rainbow of 16" at about 8:00. We both had several bites, he on PE, me on the worms, then about 8:30 he brought in his second, a feisty 17" 'Bow. Then it was my turn, and I caught the next five in a row, as the fish really turned on to the nightcrawlers... caught two of 17", one of 16", one of 15" and the smallest, at 13". I was done fishing by 11:00. These fish are truly beautiful, chunky Rainbows and full of fight. Upon cleaning them, I found that three of them had very pink, almost red flesh, and were bearing small, developing egg skeins... hold overs from the Spring plants. All of the fish had full stomachs, feeding on the decaying vegetation on the lake bottom.
Pete caught his third fish about 12:00, and twenty minutes had a huge hit that nearly pulled his rod into the water... as he set the hook, his 6# line snapped... Carp?... big Brown?... Crocodile?... we'll never know!! We left the lake at 1:00.
Great to see lots of fishermen at the lake, enjoying the great fishing on a very pleasant Fall day. Lots of kids learning the art of angling with their dads. Was hoping to entice a Brown with the nightcrawlers, but the Rainbows are the aggressive ones right now. My past experience tells me the Browns don't become real active until the water temp hits the lower 50's or the upper 40's. Regardless, fishing should remain outstanding through the Fall here! Thank you WDFW! PTL!
