Made a last minute call to give the pike another crack. After working a few hours in the morning and seeing the forecast look good, I took vacation for the rest of the day. The pike seem to still be loading up for winter. Wasn't sure how the crazy weekend weather would have impacted them.
Fished from 12:30-4:00 yesterday and ended up with 14 pike in the boat. Most in the low/mid 20" range with the largest right at the 30" mark. Did have one big girl flash on my X-Rap, but couldn't get her to hit. Even mix between frogs and X-Raps were catching them. Took a friend with me that has no boat , has never caught a pike in his life and swore to secrecy that he would tell no one where we went when asked. :) Although the area is no secret noted by there being one and often 2 boats out there any time I've been there this year...alll mid-week. AJs Dad made me aware of the location a couple years ago and I'm very sensitive to not sharing locations with others that could increase pressure in an area that other folks were generous enough to share.
Managed to not only get him his first pike ever, but also his 5th. Spent a good part of the day retying line that he had snapped, knots that he had tied, not throwing back to fish that had followed or hit to try to get him fish, etc. Wasn't quite as crazy as last Friday but with just folks in the boat who fish a bit, it woulda been another pretty obscene day for numbers. Still wasn't too shabby with 14 in the boat in just over 3 hours of fishing.
Pic is of an angry pike that I saw hit the lure but must have missed it because when I set the hook I somehow stuck him in the back....if I hadn't seen the fish I woulda thought I had a 20#er on as he took off screaming after hooked. Sure made for an easy release not having to mess with the teeth though, lol.
Praying that the weather holds up on Saturday for AJs Dad after he got hosed with a brutal weather day last Saturday as it seems like they are still chowing down!
