I picked up my buddies Glenn and Nathan and headed over to Suncrest to launch in our search for crappie. The roads were a bit icy but the launch was fine and we had no problems getting my Crestliner in the water. We headed down river towards a point near Feltons slough that often produces fish this time of year. On the way down river I noticed the water looked funny, then it dawned on me that there was a lot of ice on the lake, a lot of ice. We dodged around quite a bit of ice that was no longer attached to get to our first spot. We marked a few fish but nothing doing as far as bites. We headed further down river intending to try some areas near Tum Tum that were really productive this time last year. As we got closer to Tum Tum the ice got thicker and eventually reached from shore to shore blocking any access down river. We tried a couple of areas just down river of Feltons slough but did not boat anything. We were on the water for about 3 hours and I think each of us had 2 bites but never got a hook in to anything. I have been fishing Long with Glenn for 8 years and this is the first time I have seen the river frozen to this extent. That cold weather last week was just enough to overcome the current and freeze parts of Long. Although we didn't catch anything it was still nice to get out. At one point I thought I was living in the game Call of Duty due to all of the gunfire, between all of the waterfowl hunters and the local militia it sounded like a war zone. And for all the waterfowl hunters you're welcome, I know we forced a lot of ducks and geese into the air for you to have a shot at.
