Haven't been able to get out fishing since 1/1/14, and getting a little "antsy"... rivers blown out, so targeted good ol' Green Lake. Got up at o'dark thirty and saw that the barometer was in freefall... chances not great! Picked the southwest corner of the lake in anticipation of heavy wind gusts from that direction. To be honest, I was targeting Browns, thinking I might get into one in the shallower waters there. Arrived at 7:30, lines in the water by 7:45. Air temp a brisk 45 degrees upon arrival... water temp at the shoreline was 49 degrees. Set up one rig with nightcrawler, the other with cluster salmon eggs (cured from Coho this past Fall). Nada on either rig... changed up to shrimp on the salmon egg rig, nothing. Weather was really quite pleasant for first two hours, a little wind, but virtually no rain. About 10:00, I put on fl. orange Power Eggs to see if I could snag a passing Rainbow... that's when the fun began! Wind gusts were all of a sudden hitting 30 mph and a wall of rain hit the lake... first rain, then hail, then a monsoon! The air temp dropped at least five degrees, and saw lightning in the area. In the midst of it all, about 10:30 my PE rod began to dance... fish on... good fighter, and reeled in a beautifully colored Rainbow of 15". Rain continued so hard, that it put out my pipe several times before I just gave it up. A couple more bites on the PE, before I packed it in about 11:30, and headed home for a steaming cup of hot cocoa and an exciting SeaHawks game.
Interesting to see a pair of Great Blue Herons working on a nest nearby... saw a pair of eagles looking for some breakfast... a great day for the ducks (Buffleheads in pic). Just good to get out for a bit to enjoy the sport I love so much! PTL!
