Had been hearing about great reports about the perch at Potholes this winter so my wife and I and our fishing buddy Jerry took a road trip. I90 was a little slick with a few snow drifts hear and there so we didn't get on the ice until about 10:30. We went about a third of the way across the lake, I was tired of pulling the sled so that was going to be our spot. We started drilling a hole and discovered right away that out of the three augers we own we had brought the one with dull blades, what a pain in the butt. Jerry and I would take turns auguring, after 30 mins. we had three holes thru 9" ice. We sat there for three hours trying every thing we had to caught a perch and not a bite. Any other day I would have moved after 45 mins. but the thought of drilling another hole was out of the question with the fishing this slow. There was a large party of folks about 200 yards further out from us and three of them were packing up to leave so we packed up and tried to get out to there holes before they froze over. The closer we got to the large party of folks we could see they were getting one fish after another. We found three holes we could open up without a lot of problem so we set up there. No sooner did the worm hit the bottom and we had fish on. In the next hour we kept 75 perch about 8"-11" and thru back about 30 smaller perch and one 11" walleye. We heard folks talking as they were leaving the ice and heard of four keeper walleye and everybody had a bucket of these smaller perch to take home. Always remember to take a good auger.
