Hit the big lake out of Coulon this morning about 9:30 Trolling the Cedar River mouth area used orange label herring in a helmet that I had brined UV green. approx 30 " leader, silver flasher and 1 1/2 oz mooching sinker. I have no idea what depth, as I was forced to long line it due to the lake claiming my DR clip. The Cutt was 21" hit hard jumped once and fought all the way in. A satisfactory time on the water.

Personal best out of this lake was one that measured just under 25" about 3 years ago. My average is one like this every 5th trip out with the previous 4 trips skunked. Still alot of fun none the less.

Nice job! That's about the same size weight I use when fishing the big lake and found it gets you down about 20 feet depending on speed. When you fish the mouth are you west of the real shallow area that runs out from the river or along the eastern shoreline? I kind of like using long line when fishing bait as it is better to see the hit then on the DR and they usually hit it once and come back for the second attack! Hope to see you out there sometime

I was targeting just east of the shallows N and S where its on average 60 feet or so marked alot of fish and baitfish in that area. G-man had mentioned the smelt staging up so I thought I would check it out and there has been a noticeable increase over the last few times ive been out. The thing I am starting to learn fishing this lake is that these Cutts love to surprise you. As soon as you are not paying as much attention or have your fist gear half way down or last attempt using something bizarre out of pure frustration thats when one will hammer it., just dont go having any expectations. Im sure we will bump into each other out there sometime Salmonbarry (probably because of me trying real hard not to pay attention so Ill apologize in advance)

Ha ha! Great no worries~ I have had some close calls before on the water but managed to alert the captain before he hit me! I know what you mean about those cutts; just when you are looking away, wham!! it's game on! Thanks for the info and will give it a try next time out. I have a smoker craft with blue canvas top and 'salmonbarry' stenciled on both sides.
