Picked up Pete at o'dark thirty and headed for Flowing Lake to try for some of that 5000+ bonanza of Rainbows planted in December. Got to the lake a bit after 7:00 AM, at the county park on the north end. Began to fish off the dock at the boat launch... temp upon arrival was 31 degrees, heavy frost on the deck... began to spit snow by 7:30. Fishing with Power Eggs and nightcrawlers. As snowfall continued, the deck became slipperier and we decided to move to the shoreline. Snow continued to cover the ground and fishing was pretty bleak... water temp at the shoreline was a chilly 44 degrees. Suddenly, about 9:30, there was an explosion of a large trout thrashing around on top of the water in the vicinity of one of Pete's lines... then the tip of his rod bent double... FISH ON! ... great fight to the shoreline and Pete dragged a beautiful 16" Rainbow onto the snow covered ground! Only fish we saw all morning... caught on a half nightcrawler and one red PE. Pete had one other bite but no hook-up. Saw two boats fishing the lake, didn't see any action for them either. Both left about noon, and we left soon after as well. Snow had turned to sleet and wind arose to make for increasingly miserable day. Just a joy to be out in the great NW on a spectacular day and watch my dear friend pull in a trophy Rainbow. PTL!
