Went out for about an hour and a half. Weather was beautiful. Caught one Kokanee, 1 lb, 14". Unfortunately this fish had big sore on it's sides. I have been fishing in this lake for about 5 years and not seen anything like this before. Anybody else seen this? Do you know what this is?

Oldcoastie7... Your fish is not a Kokanee, its a Rainbow trout. The wound is an old scar, probably from the bill of a Cormorant or Merganser.

Looks like a trout to me also. It looks pretty sick but that maybe because it has been dead for awhile. Thank you for the report.

I have been looking at identification web sites for Kokanee vs trout. Other than the looking in the mouth (white vs black, Is there any other other obvious things to look for. This fish had no pink or red stripe on it's side so I thought it was not a rainbow.

Kokanee don't have spots on the tail, no real body spotting at all, their scales are are smaller, and their teeth and much less pronounced.
Have a look at this report, I have a trout and a kokanee side by side which makes it easier to see the differences.

So the smaller one is a kokanee? Well, back to the lake. I grew up in Seattle and used to fish on Lake Washington all the time. I hope it's better now than it was 50 -55 years ago. Now I fish almost exclusively on American Lake, out of Camp Murray or Fort Lewis. Good fishing right off the little island by Camp Murray and end the south end of the lake. I have tried off the VA but never had any luck. I suppose I'm not going deep enough.

Just a follow up. Before posting here on the 11th I had sent an e-mail to a WDFW guy with the photos and he got back to me today. He confirmed what you folks said, not that there was any doubt. But it's good to see everyone is agreement.
