Got my first chance to fish Omak Lake and only second chance to get into my first Lahontan Cutthroat on Saturday (5/24). This is a beautiful setting and a top notch fishery.

I was camped at Pearrygin over an hour away so made the trip into Omak Friday to get a tribal license and get a look at the roads and lake in the daylight. Was up at 0300 Saturday and was first one on the lake at about 0515.

Spent the first part of the day trolling around the north end of the lake and across the face of Mission Bay where I hooked my first ever Lahontan cuttie! It was breezy at first and then downright windy for a stretch before it settled into a clam flat day about mid morning. I ran various gear including a selection of spoons and plugs. The F7 chrome flatfish was by far the top producer and the chartreuse and green kingfisher spoon trolled behind a dodger also produced a fish and a follow-up. I fished depths from the surface to about 45 - 50 feet on the downrigger. All but one fish were hooked near the surface. Best speed seemed to be 1.3 - 1.7 depending upon what gear I was running.

All together I went 7 - 10 with the biggest fish pushing 3 pounds.

I think I could have produced more numbers and size as there was a cove that had many schools of fish in it, however when I was fishing there the wind made it nearly impossible to run boat and gear as desired while fishing by myself. I did pull the biggest fish of the day out of this area.

Finished about 1330 when I figured I had reached my proper cooking temperature and headed back to camp with a smile on my face!

Good luck and tight lines out there!

What was the range in size of the Pearrygin trout? Omak is a hours drive from Pearrygin. So, about the same distance from Winthrop?

Thanks, y'all!

Moto, the Pearrygin fish ranged from 9" to about 13" some chunkier than others. A few of the more motivated fighters among them were actually in the 10" -11" range. The drive from Pearrygin to Winthrop is less than 10 minutes and from Winthrop to Omak Lake was about an hour and fifteen minutes.

Thanks for the response Mr Dawg. Do you feel venturing out in a float tube, in Omak Lake, would be due able?

Hi Brian, Nice catch! They are so beautiful !!!!!! I have fished there once with a group of guys from our church. By the way many of them fly fished out of float tubes. Tight lines - Alan

I think a float tube would work fine so long as the wind is not too bad.

There was a stretch the day I fished where winds were about 10-15 knots sustained with gusts to 20 and I was finding it challenging to keep a 17' boat under control. A float tube would have been unmanageable under those conditions. Of course, the same day, after it laid down, a float tube would have been much cooler and more comfortable than my open boat.

One way or the other, make the trip! It's worth it.
