This year, I've been fishing at Lk Cavanaugh since late April but my last good fishing experience there was 3 days of fishing from 6/6/ to 6/8/14. Fishing was best on 6/7 from 10:30 AM to 2:00 PM. Caught my limit which included 3 cutthroats averaging 9 inches, 1 cutthroat about 11 inches and lastly a beautiful 12 inch Brook Trout. All were caught bottom fishing off the dock in about 25 - 30 ft of water. Weather was sunny but very windy from the West.
The BT was the highlight since they aren't that common in the lake. So far this year I have caught 2 BT. The first one I released because it was about 8 inches in length and my rule of thumb is I don't keep BT unless they are over 10 simply because they aren't that common so I like the thought of letting them go so they can keep growing.
I chummed with corn and feed eggs (chumming allowed on this lake) and the larger BT was chock full of corn when I cleaned it. A beautiful nice fat fish.
Fishing was good on the other two days also. On one day I caught two 9 inch cutthroat on one pole with two leaders. On another day I caught two at one time on separate poles (WA has the new two-pole license endorsement allowed on some lakes). The biggest caught over the 3 days was a 13 inch cutthroat.
I have never trolled on the lake but am going to give it a shot this year using a kayak. I am always hearing people talk about the monster rainbows that lurk at the bottom some 50 -70 feet down but I haven't heard of, or seen any pictures, of anyone catching one in recent years.
So while most people that live/visit on the lake only troll, I've been having great luck and a great time just sitting on the dock and waiting for the fish to come to me. Of course, as summer progresses the fish go deeper and then I'll be forced to go find them but I have some good ideas of where to look!
