Went to Park lake for the annual WSGWA campout over the weekend. Awoke before the crowds came out so went down to the docks to see if I could catch a fish or two. Started out throwing a pixie spoon off the boat rental dock for a trout for breakfast. Made a couple dozen casts and only had one on right at the dock. Fish jumped, lure went one way, fish went the other.
Moved over to the mooring dock to try for some bass. Pitched at the openings in the docks with a pumpkin/green flake 3" grub on a 1/4 oz. jighead. Tossed into one opening and watched the line for the tell-tale twitch. Line jumped so I tightened up and set the hook. After a brief fight, which was fun on a 1-4lb rated rod, landed about a 2-1/2lb largemouth, released for someone else to catch. She had a couple 2 pounders with her. Tried to no avail to entice them to bite. Moved down a little and caught a 1-1/2lb largie, released also.
Thought I would try for some pumpkin seeds or crappie so grabbed the 2 weight fly rod I brought. Tied on a beadhead hares ear nymph and worked the edges of the dock. No luck with that except for a 3" largemouth so back to the spinning rod. Tried a senko wacky rigged but no luck. Hooked the senko through the nose and three casts later get the thump. Set the hook and landed a 1-1/2lb smallie. That was the end of the action and time for me to cook breakfast.
