This report is for 7-20 and 21-2014 with a star rating of 3. 2 for Sunday the 20th and 4 for the 21st
I had to work on Sunday (20th) so I got on the lake early. Maybe about 6am. I have forgotten since I am writing this up 2 days later. I was first in line followed shortly after by a few boats and a kayaker. The kayaker said hi to me and it was Rob whom I met years ago on the Carbon River. He had joined Heros on the Water (Northwest Chapter) that I became affiliated with after the WA Sportsman Show in January.
I got out on the water and it was one of the hardest day catching for me. 2 rainbows and 1 kokanee. The rod I like to use got tangled up 2 times. Once I cut it out and retied, the other I just put it aside and took out another rod. It got tangled up but I was able to untangle it.
Others around me were catching. Tony joined Rob and they circled us catching fish. Ron came for an hour and got his limit. As Ron leaves he gives me some of his maggots. But even that didn’t help. There are those days! I left around 9:30 or 10 thinking I don’t know if I want to still fish any more...
But God’s mercies are new every morning. I decided that since I bought the stuff for still fishing I might as well use it up before I quit. I use wheat bran, oyster shell, blood meal, bone meal, and rock salt. Wet it with lake water when I get there and toss out about a cup or two every once in awhile. About 11 cups of chum lasts me 3-4 hours.
The evening before I think about going to the north side of the lake but I went to the south side on the 21st, again. I didn’t get on the water fishing until 7am. I put out the anchors but didn’t think about how I wanted to position myself. The sun was in my eyes. Another guy came and started still fishing by me. I had a few bites. Guy next to me leaves to find a new place. I decide to go out a little further and turn my boat around so my back is to the sun. Fish a little more with a few bites and it is getting closer to 9 and I am thinking about what I could be doing wrong.
I decide to go with my plan of the night before with fishing the north side of the lake. Where salmonkiller hangs out trolling and I have also used as points for my visual GPS. I motor over there and anchored. Tossed out some chum put a Pautzke red egg a couple of real maggots on the Wannafish A Lure glo hook. Shortly after that, a bite. I am watching my fish finder and can watch my weight go up and down. It marks it as a fish. That is the only fish on the screen. Until I throw out chum which shows up as a school of fish. I think it is the oyster shell being picked up.
Bite..."ok next time that tip goes down jerk" I tell myself. Which I did. FISH ON!!! And in the boat. In the next hour and a half I get my limit of 11-12 inch kokanee. I lost one when it was jumping. I am still trying to get the jerk hard enough to get the hook into the bone. Once in the bone past the barb it is hard to lose them.
Well maybe I will still keep trying this way of catching. For me this is a challenge. I did learn that my fish finder doesn’t see the kokanee. At least, while I am watching the screen.
Happy Catching everyone
