Had to take a couple of grandkids to take out, so I figured that I would take my Son and his two kids out for some gills.

We found that early in the morning the gills were no where to be found, but as the sun came up, the gills showed up. We found them around the docks and around the rocks. They were not all that big, in fact, some of them were quite small, but they were willing. The bigger gills were deeper, like normal.

Considering that the weather had been a lot colder the last week, I suppose that the fishing was actually quite good, but the size rated a 3. But, again, with a boat, and with a small float, and with a small piece of worm, and a little willingness to move from one dock to another, I bet you could fill a 5 gallon bucket.

Now, a word of warning to all of you granddads. My 7 year old grandson wanted to get there early, but as indicated, the gills were not hitting early, so I and my Son fished for Bass. I caught 4, up to 16-1/2", in about an hour or so, before I found a school of gills following my chatterbait. Of course, now that the gills were active, I got the bobbers out again. I should note that I allowed my 7 year old grandson and his 5 year old sister, to help me reel in the bass (LMB).

Now that the gills were active, my grandson got bored quite fast. My granddaughter was happy enough, but the boy wanted bigger fish, like the bass. How do you explain to a 7 year old that you cannot catch the Bass as fast as bluegills and never on command?

I guess they had a good trip, but granddad ended the trip early and was more tired then if I had fished for 12 hours straight in an Elite Tournament.

My advise, if you take the kids, don't fish for anything other then what they can catch fast, don't expose them to bigger fish too early, and ........

OK, your advise is requested now.

Best info I have is take them for something that keeps it interesting and if the lustre drops off Your done!! That way they are eager for the next run!!! Nothing knocks the lustre off like waiting for a bite!!!
So pick your battles!!!

Ratt out!!!

Thanks guys. My grandson said he was bored, but he told all his cousins he had a lot of fun. Both the Grandson and Granddaughter called and asked when they could go again. You are so right Ratt, quit when the luster drops off (which I did), and just keep taking them when they want to go. I did give them a fast boat ride and some tight turns before we left ................. something for the jet skies to jump I guess. Kids had a blast and fell asleep at 4:00 that afternoon and did not wake till morning. Must have been a better day then I thought. LOL
